Marble Flooring · Siliguri

Indian Marble Work Done the Way It Should Be

Indian marble is still the backbone of good Rajasthani construction. A Makrana floor laid thirty years ago can look better today than many new floors, provided it was fixed correctly in the first place. That is the part we take responsibility for. Marble Fixing Flooring is run by Hemaram Kumawat, who has been fixing marble and stone since 2000, and the team works on bungalows, flats, commercial sites, temples and public projects in Siliguri and beyond.

How we work on marble flooringOur full fixing method, step by step

As a marble fitting contractor, we take on the complete labour side of marble installation in Siliguri: an experienced team of marble mistris (karigars), daily supervision, base preparation, fixing, joint filling and polishing, quoted as a clear labour rate per sq ft or per job. You choose and buy the stone you like; we make sure it is laid the way it should be.

Most problems with marble floors are not problems with the stone. They come from a weak or uneven mortar bed, slabs laid without checking the level, joints that are too wide, no curing, or polishing done in a hurry. Hollow sound under the foot, lippage you can feel barefoot, dark patches from wet cement and cracks along a joint line are all fixing faults. We avoid them by preparing the base properly, back-buttering where needed, tapping every slab into a full bed and checking with a straight edge and level as we go.

Rajasthan stone also has its own habits. Makrana takes a deep, lasting shine but shows cement stains if the bed is too wet. Kota stone needs the right slope and joint treatment outdoors. Jaisalmer Yellow is softer and needs sealing. Knowing these differences before fixing starts is what separates a floor that looks good on handover day from one that still looks good years later.

We work with the full range of Indian marble and natural stone that clients in Rajasthan choose from:

Beyond flat floors, a lot of our work is architectural. Staircases with moulded nosing and matching risers, skirting and dado, wall cladding, window and door frames, pujaghar and home temples with carved or grooved detailing, society and public temples, society gates, Shaheed Smarak memorials, city circle gates and bungalow wall tops. These jobs need precise stone cutting, miter joints, rounding, tapering and grooving done on site so that every piece meets the next one cleanly.

We work from architectural drawings and site designs, to the measurements and finish specifications given by the architect, builder or owner. Usually the client buys the stone, and we guide on selection, slab thickness and quantity, and check slabs for cracks, shade variation and thickness before fixing begins. For larger sites our experienced core team leads the work and we can arrange skilled local labour for daily site tasks.

Marble and Stone Work We Handle

01

Plain & Designed Marble Flooring

Makrana, Dungri, Albeta, Kumari, Rajnagar or Agaria laid on a full mortar bed or adhesive, with joints kept tight and consistent. For designed floors we cut and fit borders, contrast strips, medallions and inlay patterns from your drawing, dry-laying the layout first so the pattern is centred on the room before a single slab is set.

02

Staircases & Designer Stairs

Treads, risers, landings and skirting cut to the actual site dimensions, with bullnose, half-round or grooved nosing for grip. We set every tread to a consistent rise and slight outward fall, match shades step to step and finish with edge polishing. Spiral, cantilever-look and double-height staircases are planned piece by piece before fixing.

03

Pujaghar, Home & Public Temples

Home mandirs, pujaghar walls and floors, and full society or public temple construction in Makrana and other white marble. We handle platforms, steps, shikhar bases, jaali or panel fixing, grooving and moulding on site, working with the drawings from the temple architect or murti work already finalised by the client. Levels for the garbhagriha, steps and parikrama are set early so everything lines up.

04

Wall Cladding & Elevation Stone

Marble, Jaisalmer Yellow, Dholpur Red and other stones fixed on internal feature walls and external elevations. Depending on height and weight we use adhesive fixing, clamps or dry fixing, keep courses level and joints aligned, and seal porous stone such as Jaisalmer Yellow so it weathers evenly in strong sun, dust and monsoon rain. Window and door frames in matching stone are cut and fixed in the same run.

05

Kota, Khatu & Outdoor Stone

Kota stone, Khatu and Ambaji stone for verandahs, parking, ramps, porches, washing platforms and terraces, laid with the right slope for drainage. Terrace crazy stone and China mosaic work is done on a waterproof base with proper falls so rainwater moves off quickly and the surface stays cool underfoot. Edges, drains and parapet junctions are detailed carefully, because that is where outdoor stone usually fails first.

06

Gates, Memorials & Repair Work

Society gates, city circle gates, Shaheed Smarak memorials and bungalow wall tops built to drawings with heavy stone pieces, moulding and lettering bands. We also correct faulty marble work by others: cutting out hollow or cracked slabs, refitting, re-levelling, epoxy or Tenax joint filling and machine-based grinding and polishing until the repaired area blends in.

How it works

From site visit to final finish

01

Drawings, Measurements & Stone Check

Share your floor plan, elevation or temple drawing and the stone you are considering. We take site measurements, suggest slab sizes and thickness, and check the delivered slabs for cracks, shade variation and thickness before work starts.

02

Base Preparation & Dry Layout

The sub-floor is cleaned, levels are marked from a fixed datum and slopes are planned for wet areas. Slabs are dry-laid and shade-matched so veins, borders and patterns sit correctly before any mortar goes down.

03

Fixing to Level

Each slab is set on a full mortar bed or adhesive, tapped down and checked with a straight edge and spirit level. Joints are kept tight and even, and stairs, cladding and temple pieces are cut and shaped on site to fit exactly.

04

Curing & Joint Filling

The floor is protected and cured so the bed gains strength without movement. Joints are filled with matching epoxy, Tenax or cement-based filler, and any minor lippage is ground flat before polishing.

05

Grinding, Polishing & Handover

Machine grinding and polishing through progressively finer stages brings up an even shine, or a honed or leather finish if specified. We clean the site, explain care and leave the floor ready for use.

Frequently asked questions about Marble Fixing & Flooring in Siliguri

Which Indian marble is best for home flooring?

For a bright white floor, Makrana varieties such as Albeta, Kumari and Dungri are the most durable and age well. Rajnagar and Agaria are popular where the budget is tighter. For verandahs, parking and utility areas, Kota stone or Khatu stone wears better. We suggest the stone room by room after seeing your plan and how each area will be used.

How do I choose a good marble fitting contractor in Siliguri?

Look for a marble contractor who works from your drawings and floor levels, has fixed the same stone before and can show finished sites. Ask how the base will be prepared, how joints are filled, how polishing is done and who supervises the team daily. Hemaram Kumawat has worked as a marble fixing and fitting contractor since 2000 on bungalows, homes, temples and commercial sites. Send your plan or site photos on WhatsApp and we will explain the method and labour rate for your work in Siliguri.

What decides the marble fitting labour rate per sq ft?

The main factors are total area, slab size and thickness, plain versus designed layout, amount of cutting for borders and inlay, staircases and skirting, the condition of the base, and the polishing finish required. Site access and floor level also matter. Share your drawings or measurements on WhatsApp and we will quote for the actual scope.

Do you work on per sq ft rate or daily wage for marble fitting?

For marble flooring we normally quote per sq ft, so the labour cost is fixed to the actual area. Skirting, stair nosing and edge moulding are usually per running ft, and repair or small jobs can be quoted per job. Daily wage (dihadi) is hard to control on large floors, so we prefer a clear written scope. Send your drawings or measurements and we will explain what the rate includes for your site in Siliguri.

Do you supply the marble or only fix it?

We are a fixing contractor. The client usually buys the marble directly from a quarry or dealer, which keeps the material cost transparent. We guide on variety, thickness and quantity including wastage, and we check the slabs on site for cracks, thickness and shade before fixing so problems are caught before the stone goes down.

How long should a new marble floor cure before polishing?

A mortar-bed floor normally needs several days of curing and should not take heavy traffic during that time. Polishing too early can disturb slabs and pull moisture marks to the surface. The exact time depends on bed thickness, weather and the stone, and we plan the schedule so polishing happens once the floor is properly set.

Can you build a pujaghar or temple in marble in Siliguri?

Yes. We fix home mandirs and pujaghar walls and floors, and also build society and public temples in Makrana and other marble. We work from the temple drawing, handle platforms, steps, panels, moulding and grooving on site, and coordinate with the carving or murti work the client has already arranged.

Can you repair an old marble floor that sounds hollow or has cracks?

Usually, yes. Hollow slabs are cut out or lifted, the bed is cleaned and refilled, and the slab or a matching replacement is refixed to level. Cracks along joints are opened and filled with epoxy or Tenax in a matching shade. The full area is then ground and polished so the repair blends in.

Do you take marble projects in other cities and states?

Yes. Our team works in Udaipur, Jaipur, Kishangarh, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Pali, Bhilwara, Bikaner and other parts of Rajasthan, as well as Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Gurugram, Dehradun, Ludhiana, Ranchi and more. For larger sites we can arrange skilled local labour alongside our core team. Share the site location and scope to discuss.

Is Indian marble a good choice compared with Italian marble?

Both have their place. Good Makrana is harder and less porous than many imported marbles, and it suits temples, stairs and high-use areas very well. Italian marble gives larger slabs and dramatic veining for living spaces. Many homes combine the two. Our Italian marble fixing page explains how the two are handled differently on site.

What should be ready on site before marble fixing starts in Siliguri?

Wall plaster, electrical and plumbing chasing and any concealed lines should be complete. The base slab should be clean and sound, finished floor levels marked, water and power available, and the marble stored flat on wooden battens away from rain and direct cement contact. We share a short checklist when we confirm dates.

How do I maintain a marble floor after fixing?

Use a soft mop with plain water or a mild, pH-neutral cleaner, and avoid acid, phenyl and strong floor cleaners that dull the shine. Keep doormats at entrances so sand does not scratch the surface, and clean spills quickly. Makrana and other white marbles keep their look for decades, and a machine re-polish every few years restores the original shine. Kota and outdoor stone only need regular washing and occasional sealing.
