Marble Flooring Price per Sq Ft in India: A Practical Rate Guide

What does marble flooring really cost per sq ft in India? Indicative ranges for stone, fixing labour, polishing and extras, so you can budget your home floor without surprises.

The first question almost every client asks us on the phone is simple: "Marble flooring ka rate kya hai per square foot?" The honest answer is that there is no single rate. The final figure is made of three or four separate parts, and each part moves depending on the stone, the city, the site and the finish you want. This guide breaks the price into those parts so you can build a realistic budget before you visit a dealer.

All figures below are indicative ranges we see in the Rajasthan market. Rates change with the season, the lot, transport and demand, so treat them as a starting point for discussion, not a quotation.

The four parts of a marble flooring price

  1. Stone cost: the price of the marble itself, usually quoted per sq ft by the dealer.
  2. Fixing labour: laying the marble on a mortar bed, levelling and cutting.
  3. Grinding and polishing: making the floor flat and shiny after fixing.
  4. Materials and extras: cement, sand, filler, transport, loading, wastage, borders and skirting.

When someone quotes a very low "all-inclusive" rate, check which of these four parts are missing.

Indicative stone prices for Indian marble

Indian marble covers a huge range, from economical white with grey veins to premium Makrana Albeta. These broad bands are what clients usually encounter:

Marble typeIndicative stone rate (per sq ft)Typical use
Rajnagar and Morwad white (economy grades)Roughly Rs 40 to Rs 120Rentals, budget homes, stairs, terraces
Ambaji whiteRoughly Rs 60 to Rs 250Homes, temples, halls
Makrana Dungri and Chak DungriRoughly Rs 70 to Rs 250Floors, stairs, skirting
Makrana Kumari and AlbetaRoughly Rs 150 to Rs 600 or moreMain halls, temples, premium homes
Coloured Indian marble (green, black, pink, brown)Roughly Rs 60 to Rs 300Borders, inlay, feature areas

The same name can sit at both ends of a band. A top lot of Albeta with very clean white and few spots costs far more than a lower grade from the same quarry. Slab size matters too: bigger, longer slabs with no cracks are priced higher than small pieces or "random" sizes.

Fixing labour per sq ft

Fixing labour for Indian marble in Rajasthan usually falls somewhere in the range of Rs 20 to Rs 50 per sq ft for plain flooring. The rate goes up for:

  • Small rooms with many cuts, bathrooms and passages
  • Borders, patterns, medallions and inlay
  • Staircases, which are normally charged per step or per running foot
  • Skirting, charged per running foot
  • Upper floors without a lift, where material has to be carried up
  • Sites far from the city, where labour stays on site

Grinding and polishing cost

After fixing and curing, the floor is ground and polished. Basic machine polishing with diamond abrasives is commonly priced somewhere around Rs 12 to Rs 35 per sq ft depending on the number of stages, the stone and the area. A crystal or chemical gloss finish on top adds a little more. Small areas cost more per sq ft because the machine setup is the same.

Materials, transport and wastage

These are the costs people forget:

  • Cement and sand for the mortar bed, which depends on how much the floor level has to be built up.
  • White cement and filler for joints.
  • Transport and unloading from Kishangarh, Makrana or Rajsamand to your site.
  • Wastage of around 5 to 10 percent for plain rooms and more for patterns and small rooms.
  • Spare slabs from the same lot for future repairs, which we always recommend.

A simple budget example

Suppose you are flooring a 1,000 sq ft home with a mid-grade white Indian marble at around Rs 120 per sq ft. A rough working budget might look like this, with every number depending on your site:

  • Stone including about 8 percent wastage: around Rs 1.3 lakh
  • Fixing labour: around Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000
  • Grinding and polishing: around Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000
  • Cement, sand, filler and transport: varies widely by site

This is only a way of thinking about the numbers. Your actual total depends on the lot you choose and the condition of your base.

How to keep the cost under control

  • Use different grades in different rooms. Premium white in the hall and pujaghar, an economical grade in store rooms, terraces and stairs.
  • Choose sizes that suit your rooms to reduce cutting waste.
  • Keep patterns where they are seen. A border in the drawing room has more impact than one in a bedroom under a bed.
  • Buy the full quantity from one lot so you do not pay extra later for matching pieces.
  • Do not save on fixing. A cheap fixing job with hollow slabs and uneven levels costs far more to repair than the money saved.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest marble for flooring in India?

Economy grades of Rajnagar and similar white marbles from the Rajsamand belt are usually the most affordable. They work well for budget homes, terraces and stairs, but check carefully for cracks and shade variation.

Is marble flooring more expensive than vitrified tiles?

Usually yes, once you add polishing and the slower fixing process. Economy Indian marble can come close to good vitrified tiles, while premium Makrana costs much more.

Does the rate include polishing?

Often it does not. Always ask whether a quoted fixing rate includes grinding, polishing, joint filling and materials.

Why do two dealers quote different prices for the same marble?

The name may be the same but the grade, slab size, thickness and finish are different. Compare actual slabs side by side, not just names.
