Granite Flooring Guide for Indian Homes

Where granite flooring makes sense in an Indian home, which finishes to choose for each room, and what separates a granite floor that lasts from one that cracks.

Granite flooring has a reputation in India as the stone that never gives up. It does not etch with lemon or vinegar like marble, it shrugs off heavy furniture, and it holds its polish for years in a busy household. That is why so many families now use granite in halls, verandahs, staircases and kitchens, even when the rest of the house is in Italian or Indian marble.

But granite is not a magic material. The same hardness that makes it durable also makes it harder to cut, heavier to handle and less forgiving of a careless bed. This guide explains, from a fixing contractor's point of view, how to plan granite flooring in an Indian home so that it looks good on the day of the griha pravesh and still looks good twenty years later.

Where granite flooring works best in a home

Granite earns its place wherever a floor is likely to see water, grit, heat or heavy use. In most homes we fix it in these areas:

  • Entrance foyers and verandahs, where sand and grit come in on shoes every day.
  • Staircases, because treads and nosing take the most concentrated wear in the house.
  • Kitchens and utility areas, where spills of oil, haldi and acidic food are routine.
  • Porches, parking and terraces, using rougher finishes for grip.
  • Borders and bands inside marble floors, where a black granite strip frames a room.

Bedrooms and living rooms can also be done in granite, especially in lighter shades like S White or P White. Some families prefer the warmer feel of marble in those rooms and use granite where the floor works hardest. Both choices are sensible; it depends on your style and budget.

Choosing the right granite variety

Granite colour is the first thing most clients decide, but it should not be the only thing. Lighter granites such as Jodhpur granite, China Pink, S White and P White make rooms feel open and keep floors cooler to the eye in summer. Darker South Indian granites such as Black Pearl, Telephone Black and Z Black are dramatic and hide stains, but they show dust and footprints more on a polished floor.

Look at full slabs, not small samples

Granite varies within the same lot. A small sample piece may not show the flowers, veins or darker patches that appear across a full slab. Visit the dealer, see slabs from the actual lot you will receive, and check them in daylight.

Check for filled and cracked slabs

Many slabs have natural fissures that are filled with resin at the factory. Light filling is normal, but deep cracks running across a slab will open up under load. We often go to the yard with clients to point these out before the stone is loaded.

Picking finishes room by room

The finish matters as much as the colour, because it decides how slippery the floor becomes when wet.

AreaSuitable finishWhy
Living, dining, bedroomsMirror polish or lappatoEasy to clean, rich look, dry areas
Kitchen floorLappato or leatherLess slippery when water or oil spills
StairsPolished with grooves, or leatherGrip at the nosing where feet land
Porch, parking, rampsFlamed or leatherSafe when wet, hides tyre marks

We cover the stair question in much more depth in our post on anti-skid granite finishes, because that is where we see the most avoidable accidents.

Slab sizes, thickness and layout

Granite for floors is commonly supplied as slabs in random lengths or as cut-to-size pieces. Large slabs give fewer joints and a more premium look, but they need more careful handling and a perfectly prepared bed. For most homes, slabs of around 16 to 18 mm thickness are suitable for interior floors. Outdoor areas that take vehicle load need thicker stone and a stronger base.

Before fixing, we dry-lay the slabs in each room to plan the layout. This is where colour flow is sorted out, so that a darker slab does not end up alone in the middle of the hall. Cuts are pushed towards walls and under furniture, and doorway joints are lined up with the door frame so the floor looks deliberate rather than accidental.

How granite flooring is fixed

A granite floor is only as good as what lies beneath it. The base must be clean, sound and correctly levelled. On a typical residential site, the steps are:

  1. Mark the finished floor level on walls throughout the house, so every room meets at the same height.
  2. Lay a cement and sand mortar bed, then place each slab with cement slurry or adhesive on its back for full contact.
  3. Tap the slab down with a rubber mallet and check with a spirit level and straight edge in both directions.
  4. Keep joints tight and even, then fill them with colour-matched epoxy once the bed has set.
  5. Allow the floor to cure before heavy furniture or construction traffic goes on it.

A hollow sound when you tap a slab means the bed underneath is not full. That slab is the one most likely to crack when a steel almirah is dragged over it. A good fixer checks for hollowness as the work progresses, not after the job is done.

Does granite flooring need polishing?

Unlike marble, granite usually arrives with a factory polish, so full-floor grinding is rarely needed. That is a cost and time saving. The trade-off is that there is little room to hide poor fixing. If one slab sits higher than its neighbour, the lippage will show, and correcting it means local grinding and re-polishing of that joint. Getting the level right during fixing is far better than fixing it afterwards.

Quick checklist before you start

  • Plastering, electrical conduits and plumbing lines finished in the area.
  • Finished floor level agreed with your architect and marked.
  • Granite variety and finish chosen for each room, not just one for the whole house.
  • Slabs checked for deep cracks, heavy resin filling and colour mismatch.
  • Extra quantity ordered for cutting wastage and future repairs.
  • Space at site to store slabs upright and dry.

Planning your granite floor

Granite rewards good planning. Choose the right finish for each area, insist on a full bed under every slab, and keep a few spare pieces from the same lot for the future.
